June 18, 2013 - Shelter and winery host Yappy Hour
The Burleson Animal Shelter and Lost Oak Winery are teaming up for the third annual Yappy Hour on Friday, July 12, 7 p.m.-10 p.m., at the winery. Shelter staff will bring adoptable pets to Yappy Hour for on-site adoptions. This year a former American Idol contestant will be providing the entertainment. Guests may bring their own pets. Leashes are strongly advised for all pets who attend.

June 18, 2013 - City expects crowd for free July 4th fun!
The Spazmatics, who have headlined Hot Sounds of Summer concerts in Burleson since 2010, are bringing their new wave 80’s show to the City’s Independence Day Celebration concert and fireworks. Don’t miss the free family fun at Chisenhall Fields Sports Complex. The 90-minute concert starts at 7:30 p.m. and fireworks follow after 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 4. The day’s celebration starts at 9 a.m. on July 4 with the Burleson Lions Club’s annual parade. The theme is “Celebrating Our Military.”

June 10, 2013 - Fire department offers free basic CPR
If you want to learn how to do basic CPR, for free, you have seven chances in 2013. The Burleson Fire Department is hosting free basic CPR classes on seven Saturdays - June 29, July 27, August 17, September 28, October 19, November 9, and December 21. All classes are 9 a.m.-noon at Fire Station #1, 828 S.W. Alsbury Blvd.

The Mayor’s Youth Council will host a Burleson Pet Walk on Wednesday, June 26, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m., on the Oak Valley Trail. The walk starts and finishes at Bransom Elementary, 820 S. Hurst Rd. Donations and proceeds will benefit the Burleson Animal Shelter.

June 5, 2013 - City reports no positive WNV tests
City staff has been trapping and testing for mosquitoes since the beginning of May, and, as of June 5, none of those tests have come back positive for West Nile Virus.Today also marks the first day of work for the City’s part-time mosquito control technician, whose sole responsibility is larviciding (treating standing water to kill mosquito larvae) and surveillance.

May 30, 2013 - Homes may be eligible for PRV rebate
Check your mail to see if your home qualifies for a rebate for the installation of a Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV). If you receive a letter from the City you may be eligible for that $400 rebate. A PRV is one way to regulate the water pressure.

May 24, 2013 - You have the tools, knowledge to weather the storm
Since April 2008, the City has alerted residents to thunderstorm and tornado warnings via an emergency phone notification system. The emergency phone notifications automatically post to the City of Burleson, Texas Facebook page and to the City of Burleson Twitter page. The City also has outdoor warning system sirens (11 in Burleson’s 26 square miles). City officials strongly encourage citizens to buy weather radios with S.A.M.E. technology (programming to receive local alerts).

May 21, 2013 - Stage 1 water restrictions start June 3
In Burleson, Stage 1 water restrictions means landscape watering is now limited to twice a week. Residential addresses that end in even numbers (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8) may water on Wednesday and Saturday; and, residential addresses that end in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9) may water on Thursday and Sunday.

May 21, 2013 - Elevated storage tank, water line in works
The 1 million gallon elevated water storage tank will be located at the southeast corner of Dobson Street and Hidden Creek Parkway. When it is finished, the tank will be 120 feet tall. A 16-inch water line that will service the new tank will be constructed from Alsbury Boulevard south to Hidden Creek Parkway.

May 20, 2013 - Buckle up for safety
Drivers and passengers, by state law, are required to wear a seatbelt. The Texas Department of Transportation and law enforcement agencies across Texas are spreading that word during the 12th annual Click It or Ticket campaign. The campaign is May 20-June 2. Texas law requires drivers and all passengers in a vehicle to be secured by a safety belt.

When you see flashing lights in your rearview mirror, you may get nervous. What should you do if you see a police officer behind you to ensure your safety as well as the officer’s safety? Stay in your vehicle! The officer does not know who you are and will not know your intentions so if you get out of your vehicle the officer may believe his/her safety is in question and react accordingly.

Burleson is featured in the National League of Cities’ national report on City Leadership and Families for the Burleson Opportunity Fund. The report highlights efforts by cities to improve the lives of children, youth and families in communities with populations below 75,000. The Burleson Opportunity Fund is a joint effort of the City of Burleson, Burleson Independent School District, Hill College, and donations from local businesses, groups and individuals.

May 10, 2013 - Tour Russell-Boren home on Saturdays
Do you want to learn more about the history of the Russell-Boren House at the City’s Russell Farm? Thanks to a team of volunteers, you can take a free guided tour of the farmhouse on Saturdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The farm is located at 405 W. CR 714. Built in 1877 by the recently widowed Martha Glenn Russell, an independent pioneer woman, the house sheltered not only Martha and her five children but also descendants of the Russell family for 135 years.

May 6, 2013 - City will ground spray for mosquitoes
Following guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the City of Burleson’s plan for mosquito control in 2013 now includes ground spraying for mosquitoes in areas where a mosquito pool confirms West Nile virus or where a human case of West Nile virus is confirmed.

The City will host the second Burleson Community Health Fair on Friday, May 17, 3 p.m.-6 p.m., at Hidden Creek Golf Course. The City will offer healthy food choices and demonstrations for attendees, and several City departments will be participating in the fair.

April 29, 2013 - Enjoy Splash Weekend on Memorial Day weekend
Most City facilities will be closed on Memorial Day, May 27. There is no trash or curbside recycling collection May 27. The BRiCk will be closed on Memorial Day, but staff will be celebrating Splash Weekend at the BRiCk’s outdoor pool. Admission to the outdoor pool is free on Memorial Day, only. Hours on Saturday, May 25 are 1 p.m.-7:30 p.m.; Sunday, May 26, 1 p.m.-5:30 p.m.; and May 27, 1 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Admission is $3-$4 for children and $4-$6 for adults.

April 24, 2013 - Teen Court volunteers win award
Members of the Burleson Teen Court participated in the Texas Teen Court Competition April 13 and one team come home with a third place award. The competition was hosted by Texas Wesleyan Law School. The team of Jennifer King and Trey Johnson (attorneys) and Natalie Purvis (witness/defendant) won third. The team of Blair Roy and Tabithia Leon (attorneys) and Joshua Yarian (witness/defendant) placed seventh out of 20 teams.

April 19, 2013 - Police will host open house May 14
The Burleson Police Department is hosting its annual open house May 14, 3 p.m.-6 p.m., in the front parking lot at 225 W. Renfro St. At approximately 4 p.m. the department’s honor guard will present the colors (flag raising) and conduct a firing party to pay respects to all the law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom.

April 19, 2013 - One dies in crash on I-35W
One person died Thursday afternoon at the scene of a crash on I-35W in Burleson. A second person was transported to the hospital. The crash was reported at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, in the 2700 block of I-35W South, southbound, three-quarters of a mile north of the FM 917 exit.

April 15, 2013 - Apply for Citizens Police Academy
What does it take to work in law enforcement? Find out this summer when the Burleson Police Department hosts the free 10-week Citizens Police Academy. The academy begins June 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the police department, 225 W. Renfro St. The academy is every Thursday, 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., with the exception of July 4. Graduation is Aug. 15. Class is limited to 25 students.

April 11, 2013 - Police seek suspect in hit and run
Burleson Police are seeking one driver, and possibly an accomplice, involved in a hit and run crash in the 300 block of Warren Street. The suspect hit a motor home (recreational vehicle with its own engine), which was parked in a driveway, and pushed the motor home in to the yard. No one was in the motor home at the time. There were no injuries. The damage to the motor home is estimated at $40,000.

April 3, 2013 - Signal work and seal coating are on April's schedule
For the next few weeks, the contractor will be conducting traffic signal work on the Hwy. 174 median improvement project which will require some weekday lane closures. There will also be some night time lane closures beginning at the end of April in order to seal coat the roadway surface.

April 1, 2013 - Apply for a plot at Russell Farm Community Garden
Applications are now available for the Community Garden at Russell Farm, which is owned by the City. The public area of Russell Farm, 405 W. County Road 714, comprises about 11 acres which will be home to the community garden. The garden area will be open daily, except for Sundays, for garden members and volunteers. Children under 18 are welcome in the garden but they must be accompanied by an adult.

Start now to prevent your home and yard from becoming a mosquito breeding site by eliminating standing water. Adult flying mosquitoes frequently rest in grass, shrubbery or other foliage but do not develop there. Mosquitoes need standing water to breed.

The City is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Electronic Recycling and Paper Shredding event on Saturday, May 4, at the City’s old service center, 133 N. Main St. The event is 9 a.m.-11 a.m. and is only available to residents who live inside the Burleson city limits (proof of residency including a City water or solid waste bill is required).

March 28, 2013 - Keep yard waste out of streets
In Burleson, blowing or sweeping yard waste into streets, sidewalks, driveways or storm drains is illegal. Why? Because when it rains, yard waste left in streets, on sidewalks, or in driveways will wash into nearby storm drains. Once in the storm drain system, the yard waste can enter waterways without being treated or cleaned.

The Aqua Egg Hunt will go on, rain or shine, 10 a.m.-noon, in the BRiCk’s indoor pool. If it is raining, Family Field Day (scheduled for 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Bartlett Park) will be cancelled; Bunny Daze (noon-2 p.m.) and the Bunny Daze Easter Egg Hunt (1:30 p.m.), also in Bartlett Park, will be cancelled; and the 3 p.m. Easter Egg Hunt at Russell Farm will be cancelled. If there is a rain postponement, the Bunny Daze Easter Egg Hunt and Russell Farm Easter Egg Hunt will be rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, at the BRiCk. March 18, 2013 - Apply for free Paw Pals Animal Care Academy
The deadline to apply for the Burleson Animal Shelter’s Paw Pals Animal Care Academy is Friday, April 26. This is a free four-week course. Class is 90 minutes, noon to 1:30 p.m., every Saturday, June 1-June 22. The shelter is hosting the academy for students who are entering the sixth grade in the 2013-2014 school year and who are interested in animal welfare.

March 13, 2013 - City earns third consecutive transparency award
Sunshine Review, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to government transparency, announced that the City of Burleson’s website was one of the winners of the fourth annual Sunny Awards. The City of Burleson earned a Sunny for the third consecutive year. The award, which honors the most transparent government websites in the nation, went to 250 government entities.

March 13, 2013 - Court collected more than $26,000 in warrant roundup
Thanks to the 2013 Texas Warrant Roundup, the Burleson Municipal Court cleared more than 180 warrants and collected more than $26,000. Between Feb. 18 and March 10, 187 warrants were cleared, $26,063 was collected (costs, fees, fines, bonds), and the total face value of all warrants cleared totaled $54,671.

March 12, 2013 - More than 100 participate in 5k
It was cold and windy, but that didn’t keep the diehard walkers and runners from participating in the Burleson Community 5K and Fun Walk hosted by the City of Burleson’s Be Healthy Initiative. There were 115 participants, ranging in age from nine to 73, and 12 Burleson Independent School District campuses involved in the second annual event March 2 at Bartlett Park.

March 4, 2013 - Municipal Court is looking for good artwork
Burleson’s Municipal Court is looking for some good local artwork created by students for Law Day 2013. Law Day 2013 is May 1. This year the contest features three categories - drawings, paintings and photographs. The 2013 theme is “Realizing the Dream: Equality for All.”

Feb. 26, 2013 - Protect your information
Identity theft happens when someone steals your personal information and uses it without your permission. According to the Burleson Police Department’s criminal investigations section, in Texas, just being in possession of someone’s identifying information, without their consent, with the intent to use it for fraudulent purposes constitutes a crime. Forgery and credit card abuse go hand in hand with the term identity theft.

Feb. 22, 2013 - Twenty cited in railroad crossing enforcement
Stop when the railroad crossing signals flash red. That’s the law. On Feb. 21, four officers from the Burleson Police Department’s traffic unit, with the assistance of the City marshal division, issued 20 citations for disregarding a railroad crossing signal at the Alsbury Boulevard crossing. The detail ended when a driver struck the railroad crossing gate, damaging it.

Feb. 22, 2013 - Municipal Court tapped for Traffic Safety Award
The City of Burleson Municipal Court has been named one of nine cities to receive the Traffic Safety Award from the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center’s (TCMEC) Municipal Traffic Safety Initiative. The award will be presented at the April TCMEC Traffic Safety Conference. All municipal courts in Texas were eligible to apply. Burleson, Bryan, College Station, Conroe, Friendswood, Frisco, La Porte, Mansfield and Socorro earned recognition for those courts serving a population of 30,000-149,999.

Feb. 20, 2013 - City participates in Great Texas Warrant Roundup
If you have fines that you have not paid to the City of Burleson’s Municipal Court, your time is running out. Arrests will be made and unpaid fines will be collected during a Metroplex Warrant Roundup. Notices have been mailed statewide by participating agencies for the 2013 Great Texas Warrant Roundup that starts Saturday, March 2. Burleson currently has approximately 3,100 outstanding warrants valued at more than $700,000.

Feb. 18, 2013 - Two skunks test positive for rabies
The first positive was Jan. 29 of this year on Lynnwood Ave. In that case, two dogs killed a skunk. Those dogs are in a 45-day home isolation. On Feb. 13, a Burleson animal control officer captured a skunk that was running loose on Wilshire Boulevard/Hwy. 174. There was no known contact with another animal or person, but the skunk was sent for testing because it was captured during daylight hours. Skunks are nocturnal animals. That Wilshire Boulevard skunk tested positive for rabies.

Feb. 15, 2013 - Police tip you off to burglary prevention
Eleven vehicles were discovered burglarized in Burleson between Tuesday, Feb. 5, and Monday, Feb. 11. In all 11 cases, the vehicles were left unsecured. No arrests have been made yet. Burleson’s community resource officers stress that the majority of burglaries happen when people leave valuable items in view and leave their vehicles unlocked. The vehicles that were burglarized this month were in residential driveways or parked on a neighborhood street.

Feb. 14, 2013 - Moseley tapped as Firefighter of the Year
The Burleson Fire Department’s 2012 Firefighter of the Year was a volunteer firefighter for Burleson for two years before he was hired as a career firefighter in January 2007. Engineer/Paramedic Matt Moseley received the Firefighter of the Year honor at the department’s annual awards banquet.

Feb. 14, 2013 - Davis earns Fire Officer of the Year
The 2012 Fire Officer of the Year for the Burleson Fire Department has a “lead by example attitude in everything he does.” That’s how Fire Lt./Paramedic Casey Davis was described in a nomination letter. He is the sixth lieutenant to be honored since the inception of the Fire Officer of the Year award in 2008.

Feb. 14, 2013 - Firefighters honor their own
The Burleson Fire Department’s highest honors went to Lt. Casey Davis - Fire Officer of the Year - and Firefighter Matt Moseley - Firefighter of the Year – at the department’s awards banquet. Firefighters gathered to tell stories about their shifts at the stations and recognize fellow firefighters for their service, certifications, and workload.

There is a full slate of activities for families Saturday, March 23, when the City of Burleson hosts Aqua Egg Hunt, the Bunny Daze Extravaganza, and the new Family Field Day, all at the BRiCk and Bartlett Park. And, the City’s Russell Farm is hosting its first ever Easter Egg Hunt at Russell Farm.

Feb. 13, 2013 - Alleged bank robber arrested
A man who allegedly robbed the Educational Employees Credit Union on Alsbury Boulevard Saturday afternoon didn’t get far. Burleson officers arrested Bentley Mark Jenkins, 45, of Fort Worth on a charge of robbery (strong arm) in the 7200 block of FM 917.

Feb. 11, 2013 - Daylight saving time triggers cemetery spruce up
Daylight saving time means the City’s cemetery, Burleson Memorial Park, will get spruced up. The clocks spring forward one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10. All items that are not permanently attached to the memorial or marker will be removed after the time changes. Items will be removed from gravesites the week of March 10-16.

Feb. 11, 2013 - Bauereisen honored as Officer of the Year
The Burleson Police Department’s 2012 Officer of the Year “has a strong teamwork attitude."
Officer Tiffany Bauereisen was one of six officers nominated for Officer of the Year. The Haltom City native was hired by the Burleson Police Department in September 2005.

Feb. 8, 2013 - Victim Assistance Coordinator selected for Character Award
She is considered a part-time employee but Wanda Page is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and she never refuses to respond. Page is the Burleson Police Department’s Victim Assistance coordinator, and the 2012 Ofelia Blair Character Award winner. The award is named in honor of the former clerk for the department’s criminal investigations section who lost her battle to cancer in 2003.

Feb. 8, 2013 - Collard honored for community policing
The Burleson Police Department’s 2012 Most Outstanding Community Policing award went to Officer Robert Collard, a seven year veteran of the department. The award was presented at the department’s annual awards banquet. Collard is the third officer to be honored with the award since 2011.

Feb. 7, 2013 - Haas earns Civilian Employee of the Year
The Burleson Police Department’s 2012 Civilian Employee of the Year wears many hats. Steve Haas, records coordinator for the police department, was honored for his work in 2012. He is the alarm coordinator, records coordinator, fills in as a communication specialist, and works with the City’s emergency management division and at the Emergency Operations Center as the logistics officer.

Feb. 7, 2013 - Bastible earns Supervisor of the Year
Sgt. Craig Bastible earned the respect of his peers in 2007 with Rookie of the Year honors and in 2009 with Officer of the Year accolades. At the Burleson Police Department’s annual awards banquet he was awarded Supervisor of the Year for 2012. Bastible is the sixth sergeant to earn the award since its inception in 2007.

Feb. 7, 2013 - Police employees earn annual honors
Three Medal of Valor awards and eight Lifesaving awards as well as an Honorary Lifetime Dispatcher award were presented at the Burleson Police Department’s annual banquet. Top awards include Officer of the Year Tiffany Bauereisen, Supervisor of the Year Sgt. Craig Bastible, Civilian Employee of the Year Steve Haas, Telecommunicator of the Year Sabrina Rivera, Community Policing Award winner Officer Robert Collard, and Victims Assistance Coordinator Wanda Page - Ofelia Blair Character Award winner.

Feb. 6, 2013 - City seeks input on Bike Path Plan
If you have an interest in the City’s Bike Path/Mobility Plan, mark your calendar for Thursday, Feb. 21. A representative from Kimley-Horn and Associates will be in the Burleson City Hall council chambers at 6:30 p.m. for a joint presentation with the City’s engineering services department. This is a public meeting in which the City is soliciting input on the first draft of the Bike Path Plan. There will also be discussion about the Mobility Plan which includes updates to the Master Thoroughfare Plan.

Jan. 2, 2013 - Fire department offers free basic CPR class
Burleson firefighters are offering a free basic CPR class to the public on Saturday, Jan. 26, 9 a.m.-noon, at Fire Station #1, 828 S.W. Alsbury Blvd. The course walks an attendee through very basic and easy hands on CPR, basic first aid, and instruction on an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).

Jan. 2, 2013 - Get your tickets for annual Valentine Dance
Fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, make a date for Saturday, Feb. 9, for the City’s annual Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Valentine Dance!Dinner, dancing, pictures and corsages are included in the advance ticket price of $16 per couple or $25 per couple at the door. Dec. 31, 2012 - Council candidate packets are available Jan. 23
If you want to represent your neighbors on the Burleson City Council, packets for the May 2013 City election are available starting Jan. 23 at Burleson City Hall. Packets will be available at the council meetings on Feb. 4 and Feb. 18. Those meetings are at 7 p.m. at Burleson City Hall. The filing period is 8 a.m. on Jan. 30 to 5 p.m. on March 1 (Monday-Friday). Election Day is May 11. The three seats on the ballot include Place 1, held by Mayor Pro Tem Stuart Gillaspie; Place 3, held by Councilmember Jerry Allen; and Place 5, held by Councilmember Dan McClendon.

Dec. 31, 2012 - City facilities close Jan. 21
Trash and curbside recycling will be collected on Monday, Jan. 21, but City facilities will be closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. Hidden Creek Golf Course will be open, 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m., but the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk), library, animal shelter, and Senior Activity Center will be closed. The Burleson City Council meeting scheduled for Jan. 21 has been moved to Tuesday, Jan. 22. The work session is at 6 p.m. and the general meeting is at 7 p.m. at city hall.

What does the City do for you? We will toot our own horns starting in January! The public works department is kicking off a year-long education program in the display case in the front foyer of the Burleson Public Library. A different department will be featured each month. The displays will move to Burleson City Hall the following month.

If you live inside the city limits of Burleson, it’s easy to recycle your Christmas tree when it begins dropping needles. The City’s compost/mulch/recycling center is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. The center will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 25, and Tuesday, Jan. 1, but will be open Friday and Saturday, Dec. 28-29.

December 12, 2012 - Protect your pets from weather, holiday treats
A pet’s fur is not a perfect insulator. If your pet’s coat gets wet, the fur loses some of its insulation, especially if the pet’s fur is short. Your dog’s toes, nose and ears are even more vulnerable in cold weather. It doesn’t take long for snow or ice to freeze on the pads of your dog or cat’s feet. When it is cold outside, keep your younger, older and sick pets indoors. They don’t have the fat, metabolism or the full fur coat needed to stay warm.

Constance White, director of court services, was one of eight honored by the Texas Court Clerks Association for extraordinary achievement in 2012. And, White, along with one of her court clerks, earned their certifications through the Texas Municipal Court Clerks Certification program.

December 10, 2012 - Give the gift of a sober ride
During the upcoming holiday season, law enforcement officers throughout the state, including Burleson, will work to crack down on drunk driving. The Burleson Police Department has operated with the no-refusal policy since May 2008. If a driver suspected of driving while intoxicated in Burleson refuses to submit to an intoxilyzer test, that driver will be headed to the hospital to have blood drawn.

Kellye Cunningham is currently vice president of the Urban Management Assistants of North Texas. She will serve as president starting in January 2013. UMANT is comprised of people employed in entry and mid-management positions with municipal government agencies in the North Central Texas region.

Bianca Chafin, who serves as the City’s environmental programs specialist, is the chairperson of the Regional Stormwater Management Coordinating Council for Fiscal Year 2013. The Regional Stormwater Management Coordinating Council (RSWMCC) is composed of 22 representatives from participating entities who provide guidance and oversight to the annual program.

December 5, 2012 - Time capsule will be buried Dec. 21
The City and the Burleson Heritage Foundation will mark the end of the City’s Centennial year by burying a time capsule at Centennial Park on Friday, Dec. 21. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. The park is located at 1100 Scarlet Sage Pkwy. The capsule will be buried at the center of the Military Veteran Grove, which was dedicated Nov. 3.

In January 2013, the Texas Department of Transportation will be making improvements to the medians on State Highway 174 (Wilshire Boulevard), between I-35W and Elk Drive. November 27, 2012 - Drop unwrapped gifts off at fire and police stations
If you can’t make it to the Dec. 8 Red vs. Blue benefit softball game for Heart for the Kids, the Burleson Firefighters Auxiliary has set up collection boxes for unwrapped gifts at all three Burleson fire stations. The police department also has a collection box. The deadline to turn in gifts at the stations is 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14.

November 15, 2012 - Median improvements delayed to January
The Texas Department of Transportation’s median improvement project on State Hwy. 174 will not start until January 2013. The project is expected to be complete by April 2014. The original start date for the project was right after Thanksgiving, this year. TxDOT and the project coordinator worked with the City to push back the timeline so that retail traffic on Hwy. 174 would not be affected during the 2012 holiday season.

November 15, 2012 - Streets will be closed to protect safety of Santa and parade watchers
To protect parade participants, drivers, pedestrians and parade watchers on Dec. 1, the streets around Kerr Middle School will be shut down starting at 4 p.m. so the staging of the parade can start at 4:30 p.m. Those closures include Irene Street, Lena Street and Dian Street. Every street and driveway between Gardens Boulevard and Renfro Street that intersect with Johnson Avenue will be barricaded by 5:30 p.m. The square block area around the fireworks display (the First Baptist Church’s parking lot at Ellison and Johnson) will be barricaded by noon on Dec. 1. There will be no access from Hwy. 174 to Johnson Avenue, including cutting through parking lots, starting at 5 p.m.

November 15, 2012 - Police commander earns character award
Burleson Police Commander Chris Havens was tapped for the Byron Black Character Award at the Burleson City of Character Luncheon in November. Havens is the sixth City staff member or City official who has been honored with the award, which is named after former Mayor Byron Black.

Sidewalk obstructions come in many shapes and sizes - piles of dirt, a trash bag, or a vehicle parked over the sidewalk are a few examples of sidewalk obstructions. Blocking a sidewalk is a violation of the City of Burleson’s code of ordinances.

November 13, 2012 - City employees honored for their service
More than 50 City of Burleson employees were honored for their years of service at the Employee Awards Luncheon at the BRiCk. Police Commander Cindy Aaron was recognized for her 35 years of service. The 25 year awards and 20 year awards also went to police employees. Officer Paul Lancaster and Telecommunications Supervisor Lisa Pollard have worked for the City for 25 years. Johnny Schumacher, the DARE/School Resource Officer at Hughes Middle School, was honored for 20 years of service.

November 5, 2012 - Veteran Tribute features commander
John Hince, the 6th District Commander of the American Legion for Texas will be the guest speaker at the City of Burleson’s sixth annual Military Veteran Tribute on Saturday, Nov. 10. The 6th District includes Post #235 in Burleson. The ceremony is at 2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 298 E. Renfro St. The focus this year is on Purple Heart recipients and those warriors who were wounded in combat. A monument will be dedicated to Purple Heart recipients.

November 5, 2012 - Hwy. 174 center median is topic Nov. 13
On Tuesday, Nov. 13, representatives from the Texas Department of Transportation and the project contractor, Austin Bridge & Road, as well as City staff will be at Burleson City Hall for a public meeting to discuss the construction schedule for the upcoming improvements to State Hwy. 174 between I-35W and Elk Drive. Improvements include replacement of the center turn lane with a raised curb center median with turn lanes, an overlay of the existing pavement and landscaping. The meeting is a come-and-go format, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m., at 141 W. Renfro St.

November 5, 2012 - Public safety hosts benefit for Heart For The Kids
The bats will be cracking Saturday, Dec. 8, in a benefit softball tournament for Heart For The Kids. Burleson fire fighters and Burleson police officers will face off at noon at Hidden Creek Sports Complex, 295 E. Hidden Creek Pkwy. Admission is one unwrapped toy. This is the 12th year that the Burleson Professional Fire Fighters Association Local #4025 and Burleson Police Officers Association have hosted the event.

November 2, 2012 - Police report possible link to county assaults
The Burleson Police are investigating a possible connection between an Oct. 31 incident in Burleson’s Mountain Valley and two aggravated sexual assaults that occurred in Johnson County. Burleson Police are coordinating efforts with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, which is the agency investigating those two sexual assaults.

October 12, 2012 - Police make arrests in two robberies
Burleson Police arrested a Waco man Thursday for the aggravated robbery of the Burleson Dairy Queen in December 2011. In an unrelated case, Burleson Police arrested a Comanche man on Sept. 27 for the aggravated robbery of a Burleson 7-11 store on Aug. 30 of this year. Arrested for the 2011 aggravated robbery is Daniel James Rockstad, 24. Arrested for the 2012 aggravated robbery is Mark Dewayne Rangel, 48.

The service and sacrifices of military veterans will be honored Saturday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. when the City of Burleson hosts the sixth annual Military Veteran Tribute at Veterans Memorial Park at Renfro Square. This year's event will be dedicated to warriors wounded in action and Purple Heart recipients.

October 9, 2012 - Water main break did not pose threat to public
Approximately 2,400 pounds of lime and 324,000 gallons of chlorinated drinking water entered the City’s storm sewer system Friday, Oct. 5, at 8:45 a.m. when a City contractor accidentally struck a 12-inch water transmission main while mixing lime for subgrade stabilization in Renfro Street. The work is part of the left turn lane project at Northwest Renfro Street and Brushy Mound Road in north Burleson. City staff contacted the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to report the unauthorized discharge. The discharge did not, at any time, pose a threat to the public.

City of Burleson facilities - with the exception of Hidden Creek Golf Course, the Burleson Public Library, the Burleson Police Department and the three fire stations - will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 7, between 11:15 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. so that City employees may attend the City’s annual awards luncheon. Since the luncheon is being hosted in the gymnasium at the BRiCk, the gymnasium will be closed on Nov. 7, from 7 a.m. until approximately 3 p.m.

October 5, 2012 - Time change triggers cleanup at cemetery
The clocks fall back one hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4. All items that are not permanently attached to the memorial or marker at Burleson Memorial Park will be removed after the time changes. The removal includes fresh or artificial flowers and other items that are hanging, sitting or lying on the gravesite.

Seek alternate routes around Burleson’s Old Town Saturday morning. October 1, 2012 - Dedication of Military Veteran Grove is Nov. 3
All military veterans will be honored with a Military Veterans Grove at Centennial Park, 1100 Scarlet Sage Pkwy. The dedication and planting is slated for Saturday, Nov. 3, at 9 a.m. Burleson Mayor Ken Shetter will be the speaker. The grove will consist of 100 native trees planted in a geometric pattern.

September 28, 2012 - Record number of volunteers join Trash Bash
The 375 participants removed 7,000 pounds of litter and debris during the two-hour event. They also contributed an estimated 750 hours of volunteer service which is equivalent to one full-time employee picking up trash every day during a 40-hour work week for 18.75 weeks.

September 26, 2012 - BRiCk opens at 5 a.m., starting Oct. 1
Due to popular demand, the BRiCk will open at 5 a.m., Monday-Friday, starting on Monday, Oct. 1. The weekend hours will not change. Patrons will have access to the weight room, indoor track, and basketball gym starting at 5 a.m. instead of 6 a.m.

September 17, 2012 - Council approves budget and tax rate
Burleson City Council members unanimously approved the City’s $71 million budget for Fiscal Year 2012-2013 and a tax rate of $0.6900 per $100 valuation at tonight’s Sept. 17 council meeting. The tax rate remains the same as Fiscal Year 2011-2012. The average City tax bill in Fiscal Year 2013 is expected to be $828.34 per year. The average residential City tax bill will see a reduction for the third consecutive year.

September 17, 2012 - Golf course re-opens Oct. 1
After a six-month closure, Hidden Creek Golf Course will be open for play on Monday, Oct. 1. The course has been closed since March for a course redesign and realignment. September 12, 2012 - If you are delinquent with utility bill, you may get a call
If you are delinquent in paying your utility statement (water, sewer and solid waste services) from the City of Burleson, you may receive an automated phone call, email or text from the City starting next week.The City’s Blackboard Connect emergency phone notification system is now being used to notify customers that there is an issue with their utility account. This is being done in an effort to cut down on the number of water cutoffs due to non-payment.

September 6, 2012 - Targeted spraying for mosquitoes slated for Mountain Valley, Sept. 7-9
The City of Burleson will conduct ground-based spraying for mosquitoes starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, in the southern part of the city. The ground spraying, performed by trucks with foggers, will be conducted in targeted subdivisions within a one-half mile buffer surrounding the 2800 block of Lakeside Drive. The City detected a mosquito pool that tested positive for West Nile Virus on Lakeside. This area includes 11 miles of streets and approximately 990 addresses. The spraying will take place in that area on three consecutive days, Sept. 7-9.

September 6, 2012 - Police earn seventh re-accreditation
Tuesday night, Arlington Police Chief Theron Bowman presented the Burleson Police Department with its seventh re-accreditation certificate from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Burleson was the first police department in Texas to be accredited by CALEA in 1987.

The City of Burleson is partnering with the City of Fort Worth for the Take Back Meds Event on Saturday, Sept. 29, at the old City service center, 133 N. Main St. The event is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. This is part of a nationwide Drug Enforcement Administration event.

August 30, 2012 - MYC hosts Fit Families Fun Walk Sept. 27
Burleson Mayor’s Youth Council members are hosting a Fit Families Fun Walk on Thursday, Sept. 27, on the trail surrounding the BRiCk, 550 NW Summercrest Blvd. The 1-mile walk starts at 6 p.m. Register on-site between 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. There is no entry fee. The youth council needs at least 50 people to join the walk in order to reach the goal of 100,000 steps. Free t-shirts, pedometers, and water will be provided.

August 23, 2012 - Construction of the median project starts Aug. 29
Construction of the Renfro Street/Brushy Mound Road median turn lane project is scheduled to begin Wednesday, Aug. 29. Brushy Mound will be closed at Renfro Street for at least 60 days. The project will take approximately four months. Residents are advised to use Sierra Vista at Alsbury Boulevard to access the neighborhood.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says fireworks can result in severe burns or trauma to the face and paws of curious pets. Even unused fireworks can pose a danger because some fireworks contain potentially toxic substances, including potassium nitrate, arsenic and other heavy metals. Pets should be kept in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home on July 4th.

The Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) has lifted the Stage 1 Water Restrictions, effective Friday, May 4, 2012. Due to drought conditions, the restrictions were enacted on Aug. 29, 2011, for all of the TRWD’s direct customers and indirect customers. The City of Burleson is an indirect customer.

May 2, 2012 - Most City facilities will close for Memorial Day
The BRiCk will be closed on Memorial Day, but staff will be celebrating Splash Weekend at the outdoor pool. Admission to the outdoor pool is free on Memorial Day. The pro shop at Hidden Creek Golf Course will be open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m and the restaurant is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Memorial Day. The Burleson Public Library is closed on May 28, as is the Burleson Animal Shelter.

Oct. 19, 2011 - No fee required for a garage sale permit
A permit is still required to host a garage sale inside the city limits. Now, if you are hosting a garage sale, the sale sign can not be bigger than 15-inches by 22-inches. The restriction on the number of garage sales and duration is still in place.

Oct. 19, 2011 - No trash collection on Thanksgiving
There will be no collection of trash or curbside recycling on Thanksgiving. Those on the Monday/Thursday schedule will resume regular collection Nov. 28. All City facilities – with the exception of the golf course, police station and fire stations – will be closed on Thanksgiving and the Friday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 24-25).

Vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death among teens, killing nearly 4,000 teenagers, 16 -20 years old, in traffic-related crashes each year. The Burleson Police Department is joining other law enforcement agencies in promoting National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 16-22.

Oct. 7, 2011 - New state laws affect many
The Texas legislature enacted new criminal procedure, penal code and transportation code laws that went into effect in September 2011. Those laws include new penalties for possession of K-2, an amendment to the “Move Over Law” that includes tow trucks, making misuse of social media in an attempt to harm someone an offense, and adding missing persons with intellectual disabilities to the list of reasons to activate the Amber Alert.

Sept. 19, 2011 - Firefighters honored for tower rescue
Ten Burleson firefighters who were instrumental in the rescue of a worker from a tower in August were honored Sept. 19 with a Medal of Life Saving Award from Fire Chief Gary Wisdom. Mayor Ken Shetter presented the three firefighters who climbed the tower and the lieutenant over operations with a Mayoral Commendation.

March 11, 2011 - Bonds will pay for water and wastewater improvements
Council members directed staff to publish a notice of intent to issue $9.5 million in certificates of obligation to fund the first year of the Water and Wastewater Master Plan approved by council in November 2010. A major improvement includes a 5.0 million gallon per day water pump station and a 1.0 million gallon elevated water storage tank, as well as the associated transmission main lines.

Feb. 22, 2011 - Councilmember resigns mid-term
Place 6 Burleson City Council member Chip Stephens submitted his letter of resignation to council last night. Council accepted the resignation with a vote of 5-1 (Stephens abstained; Mayor Pro Tem Stuart Gillaspie voted against). Council then approved a resolution calling for a special election, on May 14, to fill Stephens’ unexpired term. That vote passed 7-0.

August 27, 2010 - Public Works will smoke test sanitary sewer system
The City of Burleson will be conducting smoke testing throughout the sanitary sewer system over the next few months. Smoke testing is done to identify areas of the wastewater collection system that are in need of repairs or maintenance. Smoke testing may also identify areas on private property where repairs are needed, including roof drains that may be connected to the sanitary sewer which will need to be disconnected, damaged service lines, and faulty or failing connections inside the home or business.

The last day of the season for the outdoor pool at the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk) is Monday, Sept. 6. Labor Day also marks the end of the peak season for the BRiCk. This reduction in hours will allow BRiCk staff to maintain the quality of the center more effectively during peak summer operational hours.

August 16, 2010 - City manager presents proposed budget for 2010-2011
City Manager Curtis Hawk presented his proposed budget to city council on Aug. 9. For the first time since 2001, the proposed budget would slightly cut the tax bill for the average home. In addition, the proposed budget will result in a 3 percent cut in total taxes paid by properties (residential and commercial) who paid City property taxes in 2009 and will pay taxes in 2010.

July 13, 2010 - Games begin at Chisenhall Fields July 21
The transformation of Chisenhall Park into Chisenhall Fields, located at 500 Hidden Creek Pkwy., will be near completion at the end of the month when the Burleson Youth Association (BYA) hosts two baseball tournaments, Wednesday, July 21- Monday, Aug. 2.

June 23, 2010 - Burleson Citizens On Patrol program, and coordinator, win top awards
The Burleson Police Department’s Citizens on Patrol program and coordinator Sgt. Diron Hill were honored Friday night with two top awards from the Texas Citizens on Patrol Association (TCOPA) at a banquet in Granbury. The Citizens on Patrol (COPs) program won the award for the Small (less than 100,000 population) Citizens on Patrol Association of the Year. Hill won Citizens on Patrol Coordinator of the Year.

June 18, 2010 - Police, railroad combine forces for railroad crossing enforcement detail
The Burleson Police Department’s traffic unit and Union Pacific Railroad joined forces again Wednesday for a railroad crossing enforcement detail. Seven drivers, including one driving a commercial vehicle, received citations for disregarding the railroad crossing lights and arms at the Alsbury Boulevard crossing. Citations carry a fine of approximately $176 in Burleson.

June 8, 2010 - Municipal Court earns recognition for Traffic Safety
The City of Burleson Municipal Court can be applauded for its focus on traffic safety, as is evidenced by being named one of six cities to receive the Traffic Safety Award from the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center’s (TCMEC) Municipal Traffic Safety Initiative.

June 7, 2010 - No fireworks inside the city limits
The storage, use, possession or sale of fireworks is prohibited inside the city and within 5,000 feet of the corporate limits of the City of Burleson. The exception to the rule is the City’s Fourth of July fireworks show, which is free to the public. That show is slated for approximately 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, at the Hidden Creek Sports Complex on I-35W. A licensed pyrotechnician coordinates the fireworks.

The national enforcement mobilization encourages all motorists to wear their seat belts – day and night. Drivers caught not wearing their seat belt run the risk of being ticketed.

May 20, 2010 - Operation Remember kick off is Memorial Day (
On Memorial Day, honor guards from the police department and fire department will present the colors, lay a wreath, provide a firing party and play taps in tribute to military veterans as Burleson Mayor Ken Shetter kicks off Operation Remember. The ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 31, at Veterans Memorial Park at 298 W. Renfro St. in Old Town.

May 18, 2010 - Sign up for memberships and take a tour at the BRiCk
The contractors are putting the finishing touches on the inside of the Burleson Recreation Center (the BRiCk), so this week, through Friday, May 21, the center’s hours are 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Residents, and non-residents, can sign up for memberships and tour the facility, but the center will not be open for workouts. The center will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.

The Parent Meeting and New Skill Evaluation for the Burleson Barracuda Swim Team will take place Monday, May 24, instead of Saturday, May 16, as was printed in the Burleson Community Guide published by the City’s recreation department and library. The May 24 meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Burleson Recreation Center’s (BRiCk) indoor Natatorium party rooms. The BRiCk is located at 550 N.W. Summercrest Blvd.

All City facilities – with the exception of Hidden Creek Golf Course, the police department and the fire stations - will be closed Monday, May 31, in observance of Memorial Day. The golf course will be open 6 a.m.-8 p.m. Golfers will be treated to holiday rates, which are the same as weekend rates.

April 29, 2010 - Rabies confirmed in skunk on Royal Oak
A test on another skunk in Burleson has returned positive for rabies. Two dogs killed a skunk on Sunday, April 25, in the 800 block of Royal Oak, which is located in a subdivision east of I-35W in Burleson. Both dogs involved in this incident are current on their rabies shots. The dogs received a rabies booster shot the same day as the incident.

April 21, 2010 - Two more skunks test positive for rabies
Two more cases of rabid skunks have been confirmed, bringing the total to four since March 12. The two most recent cases include one in the 1400 block of Erin Dr which occurred Friday, April 16, and one in the 700 block of Wrigley Drive that occurred Saturday, April 17.

April 15, 2010 - Nine drivers ticketed in railroad crossing enforcement detail
Members of the Burleson Police Department’s traffic unit wrote nine tickets to drivers today for disregarding a traffic control device at a railroad crossing. The ticket writing was part of a combined educational effort of the police department and the Union Pacific Railroad to educate drivers about railroad crossings.

Monday night the Burleson City Council members unanimously approved a revision in the corporate membership rates for the Burleson Recreation Center (BRiCk), which will host a soft opening in May and a grand opening June 5.

March 9, 2010 - Interurban Express Motor #330 comes home
Interurban Express Motor #330 has returned to Old Town Burleson. On March 6, Basden Steel, with the assistance of City park maintenance workers, moved the 18,000-pound circa 1902 refurbished trolley car from the City’s old service center on Main to 124 W. Ellison, next to the Burleson Visitors Center and city hall.

The Burleson City Council has officially called the May 8, 2010, election. Candidate packets for seats 2, 4, 6, and mayor are available through the City Secretary’s office at Burleson City Hall, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., through March 8. Candidate packets may also be picked up at the Feb. 15 and March 1 Burleson City Council meetings.

January 29, 2010 - Police say no evidence of attempted child abductions or kidnappings
The Burleson Police Department, with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) where requested, has investigated the four incidents that were initially reported to police as attempted child abductions/attempted kidnappings on Jan. 9, Jan. 11 (two incidents) and Jan. 25. These incidents have received substantial media attention and have, understandably, raised the concern of many within the Burleson community.

January 26, 2010 - 2010 TAAF Summer Track registration starts in March
If you are between the ages of four and 18 and track events are your passion, sign up for the 2010 Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) Summer Track program coordinated by the City’s parks and recreation department. Early registration is March 22-May 21. Practices begin the first week in May, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7 p.m.-8 p.m., at Hughes Middle School.
