City says yes to blue recycling bags

Monday, council members approved an amendment that allows residents to use translucent blue plastic bags, in addition to the current green recycling bins, for weekly curbside recycling collection. The bags cannot be less than 33 gallons in size.

Animal shelter and winery host Yappy Hour

The Burleson Animal Shelter and Lost Oak Winery are teaming up for Yappy Hour July 12, 7 p.m.-10 p.m. Staff will bring adoptable pets for on-site adoptions. A former American Idol contestant will provide the entertainment. Guests may bring their pets.

The Burleson Fire Department is hosting free basic CPR classes on seven Saturdays - June 29, July 27, August 17, September 28, October 19, November 9, and December 21. All classes are 9 a.m.-noon at Fire Station #1. You must be at least 15 to participate.

Testing is negative for West Nile Virus

City staff has been trapping and testing for mosquitoes since the beginning of May, and, as of June 5, none of those tests have come back positive for West Nile Virus. The City’s part-time mosquito control technician does larviciding and surveillance.

Stage 1 water restrictions start June 3

Starting June 3, residential addresses that end in even numbers may only water landscapes on Wednesday and Saturday. Residential addresses that end in odd numbers may water on Thursday and Sunday. And non-residential addresses water on Tuesday and Friday.

City will ground spray for mosquitoes

Following guidelines from the CDC, the City of Burleson’s plan for mosquito control in 2013 now includes ground spraying for mosquitoes in areas where a mosquito pool confirms West Nile virus or where a human case of West Nile virus is confirmed.

Traffic signal is going up at Renfro/McAlister

The new traffic signal will control north and southbound traffic on Renfro Street and drivers who are heading west on McAlister Road. It will make it easier for drivers coming off of McAlister to turn left on to Renfro Street.

Elevated tank, water line, are in the works

The 1-million gallon elevated water storage tank is at Dobson and Hidden Creek Parkway. When finished, the tank will be 120 feet tall. A 16-inch water line that will service the new tank will run from Alsbury Boulevard south to Hidden Creek Parkway.

Rates increase May 15 on City golf course

Pull two more ones out of your pocket, grab a golf cart, and enjoy play on the City’s newly redesigned Hidden Creek Golf Course. In 2011, city council approved the full redesign of the 17-year-old City course. The new rates go in to effect May 15.

The incumbent in the only contested race on the Burleson City Council ballot won re-election to his seat by a margin of 119 votes. Jerry W. Allen had 210 votes to Shannan Sutter's 91.

One dies in I-35W South crash

One person died Thursday at the scene of a crash on I-35W in Burleson. A second person was transported to the hospital. The crash was reported at 2:45 p.m. April 18 in the 2700 block of I-35W South, three-quarters of a mile north of the FM 917 exit.

Three more skunks test positive for rabies

Three more skunks have tested positive for rabies in Burleson, bringing the total to five since Jan. 28. In 2012, the Texas Department of Health reported seven skunks in Johnson County that had reported positive for rabies.

Look for signal work, seal coating on Hwy. 174

This month, the contractor on the Hwy. 174 median improvement project will conduct traffic signal work which will require some weekday lane closures. There will be night time lane closures beginning at the end of April to seal coat the roadway surface.

Police seek driver in hit and run

Burleson Police are seeking one driver, and possibly an accomplice, involved in a hit and run on Warren Street March 30. The suspect hit a motor home parked in a driveway. There were no injuries. The damage is estimated at $40,000.

Keep yard waste out of streets

In Burleson, blowing or sweeping yard waste into streets, sidewalks, driveways or storm drains is illegal. Why? Because when it rains, yard waste will wash into storm drains, then yard waste can enter waterways without being treated.

Court collects $26,000 plus in warrants

Thanks to the 2013 Texas Warrant Roundup, the Burleson Municipal Court cleared more than 180 warrants and collected more than $26,000. Between Feb. 18 and March 10, 187 warrants were cleared and $26,063 was collected.

More than 100 walk/run in Community 5K

It was cold and windy, but that didn’t keep diehard walkers and runners from participating in the Burleson Community 5K and Fun Walk hosted by the City’s Be Healthy Initiative.
There were 115 participants, ranging in age from nine to 73.

Twenty cited in railroad crossing enforcement

Two skunks test positive for rabies

The first positive was Jan. 29 on Lynnwood Ave. when two dogs killed a skunk. On Feb. 13, an animal control officer captured a skunk running loose on Hwy. 174. There was no known contact with another animal or person, but the skunk was sent for testing.

Police tip off residents to prevent burglaries

Eleven vehicles were discovered burglarized in Burleson, Feb. 5 - 11. In all 11 cases, the vehicles were left unsecured. The majority of burglaries happen when people leave valuable items in view and leave their vehicles unlocked.

Police arrest alleged bank robber

A man who allegedly robbed the Educational Employees Credit Union on Alsbury Boulevard Saturday afternoon didn’t get far. Burleson officers arrested Bentley Mark Jenkins, 45, of Fort Worth on a charge of robbery (strong arm) in the 7200 block of FM 917.

Bauereisen named Officer of Year

The Burleson Police Department’s 2012 Officer of the Year “has a strong teamwork attitude." Officer Tiffany Bauereisen was one of six officers nominated for Officer of the Year. The Haltom City native was hired by Burleson in 2005.

Survey says you like what the City is doing

In 2012, a National Citizen Survey tailored to the City of Burleson was sent randomly to 1,200 Burleson households. The survey included more than a dozen categories. Out of 23 key service areas respondents rated Burleson above the benchmark in 18 areas.
