NCTCOG Safe Room Rebate Program

The North Central Texas Safe Room Rebate Program offers residents living or developing in one of the 16 counties in the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) region an opportunity to qualify for a safe room rebate. Burleson is in the NCTCOG region.

This rebate covers half the cost of the construction or installation of an individual safe room, up to a reimbursement cap of $3,000.

The waitlist currently has over 10,000 people on it. Each round of the program provides around 20-140 rebate opportunities for each county in the NCTCOG region.

This is a rebate program. If you are accepted into the program you will be expected to pay for the total cost of your safe room out-of-pocket. The average cost of a safe room is $3,000 - $6,000.

The time-frame for notification of approval for a rebate could take 3-18 months. You must be pre-approved prior to the installation of a safe room if you want to participate in the safe room rebate program. To learn more about eligibility for the rebate, go to the NCTCOG website. The wait-list is a way for the NCTCOG to gauge the demand for the program when the agency applies for more federal funding. Once that funding is granted, the NCTCOG will start to notify applicants of their acceptance. It is a first come, first serve program.

Safe Room Benefits
According to FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) having a safe room built for your home or small business can help provide “near-absolute protection” for you and your family or employees from injury or death caused by the dangerous forces of extreme winds such as tornadoes and hurricanes. Taking Shelter From the Storm, Building a Safe Room For Your Home or Small Business helps home or small business owners assess their risk and determine the best type of safe room for their needs. The publication provides designs for basement, in-ground, and above-ground safe rooms. Go to the FEMA website to find out more about safe rooms.
