Burleson Library to become a member of MetroShare Libraries

MetroShareBlackBookcropped

We are pleased to announce that the Burleson Public Library will soon become a member of MetroShare Libraries, a new north Texas library consortium forming this fall.  The seven libraries in MetroShare serve a combined population of 208,000 north Texans and their service areas cover approximately 80 square miles in Tarrant and Johnson counties. These libraries include:

  • Burleson Public Library
  • Benbrook Public Library
  • Forest Hill Public Library
  • Haltom City Public Library
  • Keller Public Library
  • Richland Hills Public Library
  • Watauga Public Library

This new library consortium provides great potential for resource sharing, cost savings and future growth. MetroShare libraries will accept one another’s library cards and share physical materials via a courier service.  Additionally, MetroShare will launch a new online catalog that provides a more user-friendly experience and an improved integration of digital titles.

Over the next few months, you may notice some changes as we transition over to this new partnership.  Fort Worth Public Library will not be a member of MetroShare, so we will gradually separate our services from those offered by Fort Worth.  We will provide regular updates on our progress and library staff is ready to assist you with any questions or concerns.

Timeline:

Monday, June 14: Burleson cardholders will no longer be able to place holds on Fort Worth items and have them sent to Burleson for pick up.  You may continue to place holds on Burleson items as well as items from Haltom City, Keller, Richland Hills and Watauga.

Thursday, July 1:  Burleson cardholders will no longer be able to use their cards at Fort Worth locations.  You may continue to use your Burleson library card at our library as well as Haltom City, Keller, Richland Hills and Watauga libraries.

Friday, August 20:  Online catalog will be unavailable after 6 p.m.

Saturday, August 21:  Library closed

Monday, August 23:  Library reopens with new online catalog

FAQs:

Can I still use Fort Worth libraries?

Fort Worth Public Library participates in the TexShare program, so you can get a free card to check out materials at their libraries.  If you are interested in this option, come by our library service desk or call 817-426-9209 and ask us about getting a TexShare card.

Does this mean that there will be fewer items for me to choose from?

Last year 91% of all items we circulated were from Burleson or from one of the MetroShare libraries (Benbrook, Haltom City, Keller, Richland Hills or Watauga).  Additionally, we participate in the statewide courier service and interlibrary loan program so if you want an item not owned by a MetroShare library, we can request it for you and have it sent to us.

Will this change Libby, cloudLibrary or hoopla?

No, there will be no changes to our digital collections.

Will I lose any information?

When we export information from the old catalog into the new catalog your library card number, contact information etc. will be automatically transferred into the new system and all passwords will be auto reset to the last 4 numbers of your library card number.  However if you use the PATRON LISTS or READING HISTORY features they will NOT be transferred over because those are private to your account. If you do use these and would like to keep your lists and history you can email a copy to yourself, print the lists or copy and paste into another format to save. If you need help please ask a library staff member.

Why are you making these changes?

This new consortium gives the MetroShare Libraries the ability to choose their own library software and transition to a catalog that provides more customization and a better user experience. It will also provide opportunities for collaboration in other areas, such as programming, collection development and grant seeking.  Finally, this new partnership provides a framework to recruit other area libraries to join MetroShare in the future.
