1. What are the garbage and recycling changes?

September 28, 2019: City's Mulch and Recycling Center will be closed.

Starting October 1, 2019: 

• Residents can begin using their own garbage containers (optional), maximum size 96 gallons. Containers may be purchased at any local home improvement store. Solid waste can still be placed curbside in tied trash bags. 
• Weekly collection of small brush and bulky items (under 3 cubic yards) will begin. Three (3) cubic yards is approximately the size of three recliners.
• Residents will have free access to Turkey Creek Landfill, 9100 S. I-35W, Alvarado, Texas 76009. Limit two (2) trips per year. Hard hat and safety vest is required to enter Turkey Creek Landfill. These items are available for purchase at the landfill.

Recycling carts will be delivered to Burleson homes December 3 through December 20, 2019. 

Starting January 6, 2020: 

• Automated collection of recycling carts will begin, and residents will no longer be able to use the smaller recycling bins they are currently utilizing.

2. Why are there changes to the garbage and recycling services?

The city's garbage and recycling contract ended in June 2019. City leaders took this opportunity to ask residents what they would like to see in their garbage and recycling services. 

3. How were the changes decided?

In May and June 2018, the city conducted public outreach asking residents what they would like to see in their trash and recycling services. An online and print survey was available and eight public meetings were held throughout the community, including an online town hall. Over 1,700 surveys were returned, and city staff utilized this input to make the following changes to Burleson’s trash and recycling program.

The survey was available for six weeks and was advertised via link on the city's utility bill, on the front page of the city's website, in the Burleson Star, for over six weeks in the the city's weekly e-newsletters, on the city's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram account, on the city's cable channel, in a news release, at multiple council meetings and the city hosted an Facebook Town Hall, and town halls at the following locations last summer: Bransom Elementary, City Hall, Hajek Elementary, Victory Family Church, and Burleson Public Library.  

4. What do we do with our current recycling bin?

Starting in January 2020, you can keep your current recycling bin or you can set it out for regular trash collection. 

5. Will the recycling carts have lids and wheels?

Yes, the 65-gallon city-provided recycling bins will have a lid and wheels. 

6. What should we do with our yard waste?

Starting October 7, grass clippings can go in regular bags but they cannot exceed the 35 lb. weight limit and can be set out weekly on your second collection day.

7. How do the changes affect the solid waste bill?

The solid waste portion of the utility bill will go down by $1. 

8. What if I don't want a recycling cart?

You can call BTX311 to opt out of receiving a recycling cart.

9. Where should I store by recycling cart?

They can be stored on the side yard, behind the building line or in a garage.
