Employee Benefits
The following benefits are among those available to eligible positions (full-time and some part-time):
  • Health Insurance - The City provides medical, dental, and life insurance for employees.
  • Retirement - The City matches an employee's required contribution of 7% to the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) with a contribution of 14%. The retirement program contributions begin upon date of hire. Employees vest in the retirement system after five years of employment and are eligible for retirement after 20 years.
    • City employees also participate in Social Security.
  • Sick Leave - Sick leave is accrued on the basis of four hours per pay period (104 hours per year). The Fire Department accrues 120 hours per year.
  • Vacation - Employees accrue two weeks (80 hours) of paid vacation each year of the first five years. The Fire Department accrues 120 hours per year. The Police Department employees receive 3 weeks (120 hours) per year (in compliance with State law).
  • Longevity Pay - Employees become eligible for longevity pay after five years of service. Sworn officers of the police and fire departments receive longevity pay as required by state law.
  • Holidays - Each eligible employee is paid for 10 holidays per year. Some seasonal positions do not receive holiday benefits.
  • Deferred Compensation - A Deferred Compensation (457) plan is administered through the ICMA Retirement Corporation. The City offers payroll deduction and the employee chooses the amount of investment and investment choices.
  • Employee Assistance Program - The City provides an employee assistance program through a third-party provider. Each employee has access to employee assistance for various confidential counseling services.
  • Flexible Benefit Plan - Dependent health insurance premiums can be deducted from an employee's pre-tax income. Employees may also participate in a flexible spending account by setting aside pre-tax income to pay for unreimbursed health expenses and dependent child care.
