On-Site Sewage Facilities (OSSF) are wastewater systems designed to treat and dispose of effluent on the same property that produces the wastewater. A septic tank and drainfield combination is the oldest and most common type of OSSF, although newer aerobic treatment units exist which represent scaled down versions of municipal sewage treatment plants. OSSFs account for approximately 25 percent of all domestic wastewater treatment in the United States. In order to assure that wastewater is disposed safely, a permitting and inspection program requires that all OSSFs must be in substantial compliance with state regulations. Services We Provide

The City of Burleson's On-Site Sewage Facilities (OSSF) regulates On-Site Sewage Facilities (a.k.a. septic tanks) located within the City Limits.

  • Permitting: Process permit applications and related fees for new and/or existing on-site sewage system
  • Inspections: Perform inspections as part of the permitting or complaint investigation processes
  • Complaint Investigation: Investigate exposed sewage and general public complaints related to OSSFs. Inherent to this activity are legal notices of violation and/or potential court action(s)
  • Program Information: Address general customer inquiries, including records information requests, permitting and fee process inquiries, technical inquiries on types of systems, and regulatory compliance questions.

Regulatory Authority

City of Burleson’s Environmental Services Office has been authorized by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to administer the On-site Sewage Facilities (OSSF) Program. The program falls primarily under the authority of TCEQ rules contained within 30 TAC Ch.285 On-Site Sewage Facilities.

Permitting

An OSSF permit is required for all new construction and anytime renovations significantly change the structure’s square footage or assigned water flow. Permits are also required if the type or strength of the wastewater changes from a residential wastewater classification. A repair/remodel permit is required anytime changes are made to an existing system. The regulations require that an owner must obtain a permit to repair, extended, modify or alter any of the disposal system’s existing components. The required OSSF permit application, OSSF Affidavit, and resource documents are available for download.
