Heating and Fire Safety Reminders
As temperatures drop, the City of Burleson and the Burleson Fire Department remind residents to take extra precautions when heating their homes. Colder weather often leads to increased natural gas use, which can result in higher utility bills and added safety risks if systems are not properly maintained.
Residents are encouraged to inspect and maintain natural gas piping and appliances according to manufacturer instructions. Property owners are responsible for the natural gas piping on their property from the meter to their home or business, and regular inspections help improve safety and energy efficiency.
Never use an oven or gas stovetop to heat your home.
To reduce energy costs and maintain safe indoor temperatures, consider setting thermostats to 68 degrees while at home and lower when away, where safe to do so. Reducing shower and bath time can also lower hot water usage, which accounts for a significant portion of household energy consumption. Keep warm air inside by closing fireplace dampers when fireplaces are not in use.
Atmos Energy recommends keeping external vents for dryers and other natural gas appliances clear to prevent dangerous carbon monoxide buildup. Snow and ice should be removed from natural gas meters using a broom or brush only. Never kick or chip ice from a meter. If you have concerns, contact Atmos Energy’s emergency number at 866-322-8667.
To minimize the risk of frozen pipes, allow faucets to drip, open cabinet doors beneath sinks and keep exterior doors and windows closed to retain heat.
If using space heaters:
- Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet, never into extension cords or power strips
- Keep at least three feet of clearance from anything that can burn, including furniture, curtains and bedding
- Turn heaters off before leaving a room or going to bed
Additional winter safety tips:
- Never leave fireplaces, candles or heaters unattended
- Make sure fireplaces and chimneys are clean and properly vented
- Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and test them regularly
- Use generators outdoors only and keep them at least 20 feet away from doors, windows and vents
- Avoid using fuel-burning devices designed for outdoor use inside your home
A few simple steps can help keep your family safe and warm this winter.
