Driving in Winter Weather Tips

Before you go

  • Check necessity: Seriously consider if your trip is essential, as roads are dangerous.
  • Prepare your car: Clear all snow/ice from windows, mirrors, and lights; ensure wipers work; check tire tread and pressure; consider winter tires.
  • Pack essentials: Keep a charged phone, water, snacks, blanket, and maybe sand/salt in your car.

While driving

  • Slow Down: The most crucial step; reduce speed to regain control and stop effectively.
  • Increase following distance: Aim for 8-10 seconds between you and the car ahead (instead of 3).
  • Be smooth: Accelerate, brake, and turn gently to avoid losing traction.
  • No cruise control: Never use it on ice, as it can cause wheel spin and loss of control.
  • Use low gears: Helps maintain traction, especially downhill.
  • Brake wisely: Gently apply brakes; if you have ABS, maintain firm pressure; if not, gently pump them.
  • Turn on lights: Increases visibility to others.
  • Watch for black ice: It's nearly invisible; bridges and overpasses freeze first.

This video demonstrates how to handle a skid on ice:

If you start to skid

  • Don't panic or slam brakes/gas.
  • Steer into the skid: Turn the wheel in the direction the rear of the car is sliding to regain control.
  • Ease off the gas
