How to Prepare Your Pipes for Winter Weather
Freezing temperatures can cause pipes to freeze and burst, leading to costly damage. Taking a few preventive steps now can help protect your home and reduce the risk of water service interruptions.
Before Temperatures Drop
• Cover outdoor pipes and spigots with insulated covers or wrapped towels secured with tape
• Disconnect garden hoses and drain outdoor faucets
• Turn off and drain irrigation systems to prevent freezing and damage
• Locate your main water shutoff valve and ensure everyone in the household knows where it is
During Freezing Weather
• Drip faucets slightly, especially those on exterior walls, to keep water moving
• Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes
• Set thermostats to maintain a consistent temperature, even overnight or when away
• Seal gaps and cracks around doors, windows and pipe penetrations to keep cold air out
Extra Tips for Added Protection
• Insulate pipes in unheated areas such as garages, attics and crawl spaces
• Close garage doors if water lines run through the garage
• Avoid using open flames or space heaters to thaw frozen pipes
If a Pipe Freezes or Bursts
• Shut off the water at the main valve if possible
• Contact a licensed plumber for repairs
• During city business hours, report issues by contacting BTX 311
Preparing ahead of time can help prevent emergencies and keep water flowing during winter weather.
